TJ Mears

TJ Mears has had the opportunity to share his expertise and strategies both locally and nationally since he began implementing the Highly Effective Teaching Model (formerly known as ITI: Integrated Thematic Instruction).

As a master instructor, TJ has taught students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, and his knowledge of the HET model is evident in any classroom with which he works.  He also has experience as an administrator at the building and district levels.  As a National consultant, TJ has given presentations and provided individualized classroom coaching across the United States.

"With the help of our
coaches, we have brought down our mobility rate from 105% to 76% because HET has drawn children
from a stable neighborhood.
Our achievement test
scores are in the upper quartile; we are now
known as an H2 school -
high poverty and high achievement."

Judy M. Fessenden,
Principal, Tulsa, Oklahoma

TJ has a very unique approach to helping teachers and students move through the process of change. He has years of experience in the field of training adults to carry out the implementation of a comprehensive educational initiative. TJ's personal background coupled with his understanding of the impact of emotions on learning allows him to connect with all students irrespective of age. His experience and ability to articulate the learning process make him an excellent educational trainer. TJ’s knowledge of how effective learning happens and experience in creating integrated curriculum has allowed him to engage teachers while assisting them in the development of truly meaningful content. Having worked with urban and rural schools, TJ has experience in the professional development of learners from diverse backgrounds of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and education.

TJ has a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s of Business Administration degree. He holds Oklahoma secondary certification in multiple fields of mathematics and science as well as administration. TJ has trained and consulted with more than 80 schools in 19 states in the United States.
